Good after noon. This is not a day for me as Vice
Before I proceed with my speech, let me take this opportunity to express my gratitude and indeed that of the University of Malawi, to PUMA Energy Malawi, through Dr. D. Lanjesi for the contribution he and his Management made to assist the University of Malawi delegation during their trip to Botswana for the 19th Confederation of Universities and College Sports Association Zone IV which took place from 18th to 24th June, 2018. Indeed his contribution assisted UNIMA and the other Colleges to effectively participate in the games and hence the wonderful performance that we displayed as Malawi during the games which was evident in the number of medals the teams won. This is why USAM felt it was necessary to recognize the contributions made by PUMA to UNIMA with a medal that the teams won whilst in Botswana. It is therefore my hope that this is the beginning of better things to come in future for the benefit of the two institutions. May I also therefore appeal to the Senior Leadership Team of the University to seriously consider extending the business we do with to PUMA Energy Malawi.
Dr. D. Lanjesi we shall be knocking on your door from time to time to explore various ways where we can collaborate. It is also important to let you know that staff too will also be traveling to South Africa for the games and I would wish if you could also travel with us as Tennis Player being the game you love. Should you decide not to go then will shall ask that you also support them. Once again accept our vote of thanks.
As to the athletes, I am so delighted to be here at a time that UNIMA is undergoing revolution following the wish of Government. Soon UNIMA will have three additional Universities and it is therefore my wish that we shall continue to work as partners in Sports. The hosting of these games started in mid-1997 and the fellowship has proceeded to this very day. I am aware that a concept proposal has been developed to bring on board all the Public Universities. Certainly there will be diversity in the manner in which we have competed in the games but I believe that we shall excel as a block. , the competition shall be tough and more demanding with the increased number of institutions participating in the games. My words of encouragement to is you should be focused and prove that you are a force to reckon.
It is therefore my wish to retaliate our commitment to assist the Government in Sports development. We shall remain committed to this cause and in that vein shall always be available to assist in ensuring that the games are properly handled and managed.
I wish therefore to commend Government for the assistance it has rendered over the past years. It is for this reason that we in the academic has witnessed tremendous sports development in UNIMA and hence our contribution to the National Sports Development. It is my hope that as we move to the more encompassing games Government shall always provide the necessary financial resources to improve the status of sports in all the Public Universities.
I will be therefore finalizing my speech by requesting all of you to give a big round of applause to our Chancellor, The President of Republic of Malawi, His Excellency, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika for his Leadership and his keen interest to develop sports in the University.
I thank you all for your listening and may God Bless you all.
