University of Malawi Staff Sports Association (UMSSA)

The University of Malawi Staff Sports Association (UMSSA) started in 1999 as an interim committee comprising late Dr D.G. Simango of the then Bunda College as President, Mr J.B. Chalera (Chancellor College) as General Secretary, and J. Kanonji of College of Medicine as Treasurer. The initial task for the committee was to facilitate University of Malawi’s participation in the 1999 Southern African Universities’’ Staff Sports Association (SAUSSA) games. In 2000, the interim committee took the name University of Malawi Staff Sports Association (UMSSA) and became the main organising body for sports activities among members of staff in the University of Malawi. Ever since its formation. UMSSA has been a regular feature at many SAUSSA games including those hosted by Universities of South Africa (2003), Botswana (2005), North West (2006), and most recently, Universities of Zambia, Lesotho (2015) and Swaziland (2016). In December 2008, UMSSA successfully hosted SAUSSA games at College of Medicine.

Besides its international exploits, UMSSA also organises inter-college games. Previously, this used to be an affair for only the constituent colleges of the University of Malawi. With the mushrooming of numerous universities in the country, the format of these inter-college games has changed to include other colleges and universities outside Unima. This has changed the nature of the games to more of inter-university sports festival.
