LAUNCH OF THE PHONOLOGY OF CHICHEWA A BOOK BY PROFESSOR LAURA J. DOWNING AND PROFESSOR AL MTENJE

08 August, 2017

The University of Malawi is pleased to inform the general public and all stakeholders about the launch of a book titled The Phonology of Chichewa co-authored by Laura J. Downing, Professor of African Languages and Linguistics at the University of Guthenburg, Sweden and Al Mtenje Professor of African Languages and Linguistics at the University of Malawi’s Chancellor College.

The book, published by Oxford University Press, is the first comprehensive publication on the phonology (sound structure) of Chichewa and has drawn extensively from current linguistic theories in the description and analysis of Chichewa phonological data. The book balances between theory and description in order to carter for the interests of both theoretical linguists and those who are more inclined towards African Linguistics, especially the area of Bantu languages to which Chichewa belongs.

The launch will take place in the Senior Common Room, Chancellor College on Friday 11th August, 2017 from 2 p.m. All invited guests are requested to be seated by 1:40 pm.

Further details regarding the book launch can be obtained from the University Office during working hours (from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) by calling the Assistant Registrar Academic, Mr. Christopher Namagowa on (+265) (0) 999 542 172.
