Pro-Vice Chancellor’s Office
Pro Vice-Chancellor: Prof. Al. Mtenje, BEd Mlw, MA S. Illinois, PhD London
I would like to welcome you all to this new University of Malawi Website. The new website is one way through which the University desires to rebrand itself by among other things, improving its web presence. The University of Malawi (fondly known as UNIMA among its staff, students and graduates) is the mother university in Malawi whose influence has gone beyond the borders of the country. A quick survey indicates that many graduates from UNIMA have gone on to occupying positions of influence in many sectors (including education, agriculture, trade, the arts, communication, engineering, et cetera) in Malawi, across the region and even beyond. One bench mark that has made UNIMA such a centre of excellence over the years is the University’s pursuit of quality higher education achieved through various means of quality control put in place in the form of form of external examiners, quality assurance structures, enabling policies, and a very active Senate. Going forward, UNIMA wants to enhance its presence internationally through the introduction of research postgraduate programs that speak to regional as well as international trends and needs. The university is also on a mission to improve its relations with other universities in the region and beyond through various forms of collaboration. At present, the university has active collaborations with universities across the globe (in Africa, Asia, Europe and the USA). The university also works with various non-governmental organisations both local and international to ensure that its activities are aligned with current needs and inclinations in society. There is also a productive relationship between the university and the industry. Over the years, the university has interfaced closely with industry which has provided financial, technical and other forms of support to its programs and other activities.
Besides academic work and research, there is a vibrant sporting culture at UNIMA coordinated by the University of Malawi Sports Association. Every year UNIMA participates in international sports festivals such as Southern Africa Universities Staff Sports Association (SAUSSA) and Confederation of Universities and Colleges Sports Association (CUCSA) games.
The University of Malawi should therefore be the University of Choice for prospective students, staff and researchers from within the country and abroad. To current UNIMA staff and students, UNIMA owes its greatness to your dedication and pride.
