The Accordia Global Health Foundation announced Dr. Kamija Phiri from the University of Malawi as the recipient of the 2012 Merle A. Sande Health Leadership Award.

Dr. Phiri was specifically honored for his outstanding work related to finding new strategies to prevent malaria in children under five, especially in cases of severe anemia, one of malaria’s most common and devastating complications.

As the Dean of Postgraduate Studies and Research at the College of Medicine, Dr. Phiri harnesses his passion to ensure that real, sustainable research capacity is being built at one of Africa’s young but growing medical schools.
