University Sports Association of Malawi
OVERVIEW OF USAM
University Sports Association of Malawi (USAM) is a body of the University of Malawi that was established in Under the University of Malawi Act 1974. This association was registered with the Malawi National Council of Sports in the year of 1974. This association’s main objectives are to develop a sporting culture amongst students throughout all university colleges, to enhance sporting competition among student members, to promote high standards of sporting achievements among members and to develop skills and values such as team work, co-operation, fair play, sharing, self esteem, respect for rules, leadership, discipline, self respect and confidence.
Full membership of the Association is conferred to affiliated College Sports Committees and Sports Clubs of College. Representation is drawn from the five constituents colleges of the University of Malawi and these are Bunda College, Chancellor College, Kamuzu College of Nursing, Polytechnic and College of Medicine.
The Executive Committee comprises of the following:
- The Chairperson who is appointed by Senate;
- The Secretary who shall be the Registrar or his Representative;
- The Treasurer who shall be the Finance Officer of his/her Representative
- One of each of Vice Chairperson, Vice Secretary, Vice Treasurer
- Director of the Council or his/her representation;
- Committee members whose composition shall be one representative from each constituent college of the University;
- University Students Union Director of Sports
- College Sports Administrator or Principal’s representative;
- College Students Union Sports Director;
- College Students Union Chairperson;
- University Students Union Chairperson.
The services provided include sporting activities like basketball, darts, football, hockey, lawn tennis, marathon, 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters, 1500 meters, netball, squash, pool, table tennis and volleyball. When necessary, elite athlete training is provided for university students that qualify for international games and coach training.
DUTIES OF THE CHAIRPERSON
The chairperson presides at all meetings of the Association and the committee
The Chairperson is primarily responsible for the general running and well being of the Association.
DUTIES OF THE SECRETARY
The Secretary is the principal administrative officer of the association and is therefore responsible to the Association for the administration and management of its affairs
The Secretary is responsible for conducting the correspondence of the Association; attending all meetings of the association and of the committee, and taking and recording the minutes of such meetings.
The Secretary is responsible for maintaining and having custody of an up-to-date register of members.
DUTIES OF THE TREASURER
The Treasurer is responsible for the control of monies and handling of such monies and is responsible for keeping of accounts and presenting up-to-date statements of income and expenditure and prepares the annual statement of the Association at the end of each year.
