As chancellor College continues to satisfy the mandate of the University of Malawi which among others is to engage the community, it is in the advanced stage of preparing for the opening of a radio station on campus. According to communication issued by the Principal’s office to both students and staff members on 3rd April, 2013, the new radio station will be housed at 12 malemia road in Zomba opposite the Vice-Chancellor’s official Residence.

Professor Kamlongera further advised that in a couple of weeks to come, customization of 12 Malemia Road into a broadcasting Station and installation of equipment should be complete to allow for on air testing and inception phase.

The establishment of the Chancellor College community radio Station has been made possible with the support of the Lake Chilwa Basin Climate Change Adaptation Programme (LCBCCAP) coordinated by LEAD as a centre of University of Malawi based at Chancellor College in collaboration with World Fish and the Department of Forestry through the Forestry Research Institute of Malawi (FRIM).

Covering a radius of 100km and targeting the Lake Chilwa basin districts of Zomba, Maching and Phalombe, the Chancellor College Community radio will play a pivotal role in the production and presentation of programmes focusing on climate change and other developmental issues based on the LCBCCAP expected outputs and as stipulated in the license issued by MACRA as published in the government gazette of 23rd November 2012.

The presence of a radio station at Chancellor College has created an opportunity for both staff members and students to enhance their efforts in community engagement but to also benefit from hands on training in radio programme production and presentation. It is therefore expected that the radio station will enhance quality in the graduates the college produces especially in areas related to the media and communication.

LCBCCAP is funded by the Royal Norwegian Embassy with up to K40 million allocated for the establishment of the new radio station. According to professor Kamlongera, Chancellor College paid for both the TV and Radio licences and was providing logistical support through studio housing, facilitation of procurement of requisite goods and via provision of staff support.

The University of Malawi Central Office is most pleased to see one of its colleges collaborate with external partners in its attempt to be responsive to the needs of Malawi in the critical areas of climate change and sustainable development.
